Journal/Frames

How to choose a frame that actually suits you

Face shape is only part of it. Bridge fit, temple length and weight decide whether you still like the frame six months later.

Most frame advice starts and ends with face shape. It is a reasonable starting point and a poor finishing point, because the frames people abandon after a few months are almost never abandoned for looking wrong. They are abandoned for fitting badly.

Start with the bridge

The bridge carries most of the weight. If it is too wide the frame slides down and you spend the day pushing it up. If it is too narrow it pinches and leaves marks. A frame that fits at the bridge will sit still without being tight anywhere, and that single measurement rules out more frames than face shape ever will.

Then the width

The frame should end roughly where your face ends. If the temples splay outwards to reach your ears, the frame is too narrow and the arms will lose their grip within weeks. If there is a visible gap at the side, it is too wide and the frame will rock when you move.

Then the weight, honestly

A heavy acetate frame that looks excellent in the mirror can be genuinely tiring by evening, particularly with a strong prescription, because a stronger lens is a thicker and heavier lens. If your prescription is high, a lighter frame and a higher index lens will do more for how much you actually wear the glasses than any styling decision.

Wearing a frame is not the same as photographing it.

Where face shape does help

Once fit has narrowed the field, contrast is a useful rule. Angular frames add definition to rounder faces. Softer, rounded shapes take the edge off a strong jaw or high cheekbones. A frame whose top line sits roughly along your brow tends to look intentional rather than accidental. These are tendencies, not rules, and plenty of people look better breaking them.

The test that matters

Put the frame on, look away, look back, then walk around the store in it for a minute. If you still like it after a minute of ordinary movement, and it has not slipped, you have probably found the one.

We would rather you left with a frame you keep wearing than one you liked for a week. That is also why we will talk you out of a frame, even after you have picked it up.

Still deciding?

Ask us in the store

Bring your current glasses and your prescription. We will tell you what will work and what will not, without pushing you toward the expensive answer.
